MOROCCAN AMETHYST

I struggled with the name for this web page. I wanted to call it "When is Moroccan Amethyst really Moroccan Amethyst?".
That is because collecting Moroccan Amethyst via the Internet can be quite frustrating. Yes, Amethyst means purple in
color, but, not all purple glass is Moroccan Amethyst. Nearly one third the glass listed for sale on web sites such as
EBAY as being Moroccan Amethyst are really some other glass entirely!

Moroccan Amethyst was made in the early sixties by the Continental Can Company under the trade name of Hazel Ware.
Moroccan Amethyst items found in the original box will have the Hazel Ware and Continental Can Company identifying
marks. I feel certain that the Hazel Atlas Glass Company must have become the Hazel Ware division of the Continental
Can Company in later years. This is because knowledgeable experts use the Hazel Atlas and Hazel Ware names
interchangeably.

The color is everything for Moroccan Amethyst collectors. People collect Moroccan Amethyst purely for it's beautiful
purple color. The Moroccan Amethyst pattern or shape of glass is found in other colors and not always considered to
be Moroccan Amethyst. Most Moroccan Amethyst shaped pieces can also be found in a beautiful light blue color that was
sold under the Capri name. Similar shaped glass from the same molds are also found in solid white milk glass, crystal,
opaque green, and opaque amber. When the Amethyst and Milk Glass are used together the box will be labeled Alpine. So
Moroccan Amethyst is like Royal Ruby in that the color identifies the collectible pattern name as much as the shape. But,
to be Moroccan Amethyst it must have both the correct shape with the purple color or it just some other glass.

There are two different shaped patterns within Moroccan Amethyst with variations. The square and round items are part of
a shape called Colony. The rounded items frequently have a swirl running from top to bottom like in the tumblers. This is
the largest grouping of Moroccan Amethyst including serving items, vase, cocktail shaker, ice tub, and two sizes of candy
dishes. The more often thought of shape is the other 8-sided, Octagon shape. The tumblers that go with this shape do not
have the swirl and have either a stemmed or flat bottom. There are also 3-sided ash trays. Collectors find it neat that the
3-sided ash trays have both rounded corner (goes with Colony shaped items best) and pointed corner (goes with the Octagon
shaped items best).

I'm sure that people mix and match by color, but the coffee cup seems to be the only piece that was shipped from the factory
with both Colony and Octagon shapes. It has a rounded cup which seems to fit better with Colony. The sharp lines and edges
of the handle seem to fit better with the Octagon shaped items. There are two more shapes for cups and both have a very strong
swirled design. The snack set cups have a closed handle and punch sets have an open hooked handle to allow them to hang on the
punch bowl. Snack and punch sets are found in Alpine color combination and as well as in solid milk glass and crystal. Snack
sets are available also in solid purple. The punch bowl has not yet been found in purple. I have only seen the punch bowl base in
purple. Both cups have the swirl continue into the base of the cup. This ends up with a cup that is almost footed that fits
perfectly on the snack plate. Of the many snack sets at my disposal the Hazel Ware ones are the only ones that have the plate
and cup molded to almost snap together. You can tilt the snack plate substantially and the cup just sets in place as designed.

There are many oddities to watch for in Moroccan Amethyst. The Alpine sets with the combined purple and milk glass colors make
them very desirable to collectors, which in turn makes them more difficult to find. There is a 7-piece "Bartender's Set" combining
the chrome top cocktail shaker with 6 of the smallest drink glasses. There is a 4-piece "The Magic Hour" cocktail set combining
the cocktail stirrer with metal stir spoon and 2 of the smallest drink glasses. I have seen one other rare boxed set that had ice
teas with milk glass coasters. The coasters have nubs of glass around the outside edge similar in design concept like Candlewick or
Lariat. Two additional oddities to mention are a large bowl with apple design in the bottom and ash trays can be found with a floral
design. Both the apple and floral designs are very well done and very noticeable. All mentioned oddities are becoming very difficult
to find. REMEMBER, to collectors of sets the box is frequently as much or more important than the glass. So PLEASE do NOT
mark on the boxes. There is a rapidly growing group of collectors looking for items in original boxes and sadly dealers are not
making sales because they've damaged the boxes or even worse thrown them away.

One other category of oddity is what is missing in Moroccan Amethyst is noteworthy! Can you imagine setting a table without a
cream and sugar, butter dish, sherbets, gravy boat, and/or salt & pepper? One acknowledged expert does show a purple colored
salt & pepper, but does not price them. I have seen two types of Amethyst colored salt & pepper set offered for sale. One is
pictured in the box area of this web page and I believe it is the correct shakers because it has the Hazel Atlas mark. The other
set I have seen listed on the Internet as Moroccan Amethyst were not marked Hazel Atlas so I am reluctant to call them Moroccan
Amethyst until I see a pair with the Hazel Atlas mark. Also, the Octagon shape has no large serving bowls or platters. You're
forced to use the Colony shaped serving bowls or platters or since the Alpine sets have shown us that milk glass goes great with
purple, why not use some milk glass like Westmoreland's Paneled Grape to complete your table setting?

Moroccan Amethyst is indeed becoming more difficult to find. I attribute that to the large interest in Mid-Century
or Modernism items that this pattern fits into nicely.

Under late breaking news, the 4-place box set shown below is in 8-side Octgon shape with the common cup. The back of
the box shows many of the round colony pieces as suggestions to add to the 8-sided Octagon shaped items in the box.
Also there are two additional additional boxed sets other then those shown or the one mentioned early with coasters.
There is a smoking set I have seen and also a large place setting box with 16 pieces that is like the first 4-place
setting only there are 4 of each item.

Late breaking news is the discovery of the 16-piece ice tea and coaster set. This set consists of 8 of the tall, swirl
Moroccan amethyst tumblers with 8 of the milk glass coasters Hazel Atlas made for this set. Care must be taken when
buying this set in individual pieces because Hazel Atlas made similar, but incorrect coasters in at least four other
patterns. THANKS goes to Randy Ramsey for this new information and pictures. Go to the bottom of this page to see
this newly found set. I will add any newly found items or sets if they are passed along to iwantglass@iwantglass.com
along with pictures needed to document the find.
